      About Me

So, a bit about myself, about four years ago, I took a great interest in all things from the land called Japan. As with a great majority of anime fans, I started off as a child, watching Pokemon, Digimon, Sailor Moon, DBZ and so on and so forth. A couple moons ago, I decided to experiment with anime walling, and once I started venturing into the anime wall designing, I realized how much dedication and focus is required in order to produce perfection, and even then, perfection is barely achievable, and my perfection may be seen as a total failure by some, and vice versa. However, I'm constantly looking for ways to improve, looking up tutorials and what not. As of August 2010, my walling career has been put on halt, as I'm more of a writer then a waller, with this anime site, SUTORAIKUanime.

I try to watch anime every single day, and have finished over 120 different series. I wouldn't say anime is my life, because then I'd be an otaku, which I'm not (more of a part-time otaku, since I do collect posters and the occasional figurine), but it plays a big part in my life.

I listen to all types of music, mostly Jpop/Jrock and anime music though. I'm a bigtime audiophile, I cannot stand low sound quality. Let's just say, I cannot stand low quality anything, in terms of electronics.

I love Japanese pop culture and anything related to it, even if it's just a simple UCC Coffee can, after I drink one, I always keep the can.

As far as my tech knowledge goes, I'm a hardware guy and I build my own PCs. Note: I am a hardcore auto otaku, don't get me started on any automotive topics, over 5,500 posts on SCF and counting. And I'm DYING to get my hands on a Honda S2000. Will it be ita-fied? Unfortunately not!

      That is all, minna-san!

Ok...I'm not actually that well-versed in GIMP so I'm just gonna treat it like PS as I go along. Based on what you have told me, I think the very first problem to your wallpaper quality is the fact that you are using "threshold" in the first place.

From what I briefly read, threshold converts the image into a two colour image (the example I saw was black and white). The problem with converting any image down to two colours is that you remove any form of anti-aliasing (I mean, the very definition of anti-aliasing is the gradual change between one colour to another).

Now I believe what you get after using "threshold" (based on the final images I see in your wallpapers) is white flat base colours, some black base colours to represent shadows and black lines but with a bit off white on the outside of the lines (the white I believe is due to the threshold filter mimicking the anti-aliasing). What you probably do after that is maybe run another blur filter (possibly smart blur or Gaussian blur) to give the image back some form of "anti-aliasing".

Assuming that most of what I just said is true, then I can tell you that you are doing almost everything wrong. Firstly, I don't think you should even use "threshold" in the first place. It's like one of those filters that are there but no one uses. Now if you really want to flatten an image down to black and white, what I could suggest is you desaturate the image instead and the mess around with the contrast/colour balance. That way, you can still maintain the anti-aliasing (just don't push the contrast too high or else you lose the anti-aliasing anyway). Anyhow, using blur filters as a means to get anti-aliasing is probably the wrong way to go as well because, unless you do it properly or with a really high-res image, you'd probably end up with a blurred picture overall (remember what I said about sharpness?)

As for the text, I'm still not sure why you have to delete the old text layer and fill in the new path. Essentially, you are converting the vector into a raster for no reason at all. Now I do not know how GIMP actually does handles text on paths so I can't really judge.

As for your pixel by pixel modifications, unless you REALLY have that much time, I'd say don't bother. Pixel art is supposed to be done on a small scale. If you colour pixels on a large scale, it'll take a really long time and you'd most likely lose track of the big picture halfway anyway.

I'm not sure what else I can say so if you need to ask anything else, feel free to just drop me another message. But one more final not about vectors and PS and such. If you really want to deal with vectors, I'd suggest you not to use PS because PS isn't designed to deal with vector either. If you want, you can use PS to "vexel" instead (I'll leave it to you to do your own research). As for vectoring, I myself use Adobe Illustrator to do my vector then transfer the vectors over to PS to finish up the wallpaper. If you don't want to buy Illustrator, may I suggest this free vector-based program called "Inkscape". I don't use that program but I heard it's really good as well. Try bugging @moutonzare if you need any info about Inkscape or if you need help bringing you up to speed with the program (XD).

Anyhow, I need to run now so if you need anything else, like I said before just drop me a line. Hope to see improvements in the future .(n_n).
